Recognizing innovation and social added value
Prof. Gerhard Fettweis, TU Dresden
This award is a special recognition for me – it emphasizes how important trustworthy technologies are for our networked society. Trustworthiness is not a technical extra, but a prerequisite. This award encourages me to continue along this path in my research.

The Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities is presenting the internationally oriented Pioneer Award for the first time this year – and is thus honoring SEMECO cluster spokesperson Prof. Gerhard P. Fettweis for his outstanding technological achievements with social relevance. The high-tech prize, endowed with 300,000 euros, was presented at a ceremony in Munich in April.
Sponsored by the Ulrich L. Rohde Foundation, the prize recognizes excellent research that is successfully transferred into practice. The aim is to promote innovations that sustainably improve people’s everyday lives.
Prof. Fettweis, the Vodafone Chair of Mobile Communications Systems at TUD Dresden University of Technology and is the Scientific Director of the Barkhausen Institute, is one of the leading minds in the field of mobile communications. His research has played a decisive role in the development of mobile communication standards such as 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G. With concepts such as the Tactile Internet and his work on energy-efficient data transmission, he has played a key role in shaping the future of networked technologies. Gerhard Fettweis is also actively involved in the transfer of scientific findings to industry – for example by founding numerous start-ups in the fields of smart mobility and smart cities.
We congratulate our cluster spokesperson on this outstanding recognition.
