Cosmo Science Forum

Since October 1, 2024, interested visitors have been able to experience the medical technology of the future at the COSMO Science Forum in Dresden. In the exhibition, scientists from Dresden’s research institutions present their current projects. Interactive exhibits offer exciting insights into the latest developments in medical technology. Several research projects from the Clusters4Future initiative SEMECO (Secure Medical Microsystems and Communications), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), are part of the exhibition, allowing visitors to experience their research in an understandable and tangible way.

Networked medical technology? But secure! – Secure and trustworthy system architectures

Networked medical devices enable quick information transfer and thus improve patient care. One example is the networked pacemaker, which allows patients to monitor their own health data. At the same time, this example shows how important trust in such networked devices is. Visitors playfully discover the importance of data protection, IT and operational security – three essential pillars of trustworthy networked healthcare. The scientists in the SEMECO project are researching these aspects.

Ultrasound: More than just shades of gray – Try out ultrasound technology and understand innovation potential

Visitors are given the opportunity to examine their own necks with an ultrasound device and see various organs for themselves. The challenges and weaknesses of current ultrasound devices become clear. An accompanying science comic explains in an entertaining way how the next generation of ultrasound technology significantly improves image resolution. This further development is part of the HybridEcho project.

An attentive hearing aid: Psychoactive multisensory communication implant helps to hear individual voices more clearly

Visitors can experience how modern hearing aids with artificial intelligence could improve hearing in the future. In situations where many people are talking at the same time – such as at parties or large events – today’s hearing aids have difficulty separating individual conversations. Future devices could automatically recognize which conversation is of interest and place it in the foreground. The new technology specifically amplifies the desired voices and suppresses other noises. A 3D model illustrates how these minimally invasive hearing aids are inserted in the inner ear and how they work. The exhibit is complemented by a science comic that explains how this AI-supported technology works in an understandable and entertaining way.

Other involved SEMECO projects

“Dr. Zukunft” offers fascinating insights into the medical technology of tomorrow and invites visitors to learn and experience innovative technologies in a playful way. An extensive program with workshops, discussion rounds, readings, science cafés and dialogue formats accompanies the exhibition. Researchers from the SEMECO ecosystem actively participate in the events and provide insights into their research. They answer questions and share their knowledge on socially relevant topics.

The following other SEMECO projects and their researchers are actively contributing to the accompanying public program and making current research of the cluster accessible and understandable to a wide audience: “New data transmission technology for computer tomography” and “Active capsule endoscopy”.
